Don Li-Leger

Don Li-Leger (b. 1948, North Vancouver, BC) demonstrated an avid interest in art and nature while growing up and the symbiosis of these two things has been an instrumental force in his life as an artist.

Li-Leger studied art and natural science in the 1970s and throughout that decade also traveled to Asia and India, drawn by the art, gardening and philosophical traditions.

The work of this renowned Canadian artist spans three decades, the first two of which he spent building a reputation as a realist (nature) artist and print maker. In 1999 Li-Leger began to paint a series of works that combined abstract elements with geometry, botany, calligraphy and collage.

This turn into “Asian Fusion” came as a surprise to loyalists but represented no loss of momentum for Li-Leger’s success in the art world. About this genre of his work, the artist has said, “…the work grew out of my intensive involvement with monoprints, where I improvised and combined various imagery with broad areas of rolled-on, saturated colour.”

Don Li-Leger has exhibited paintings throughout North America. He has produced etchings and monoprints and his art is widely available as fine-art prints and posters.

Although he has studied with many masters and cites artists such as Rothko, Mondrian, Diebenkorn and Kandinsky as his influences, Li-Leger’s family life and garden are the crux of his inspiration. He paints from his home studio in White Rock, BC, where he lives with his wife Cora, herself an artist and art-therapist. They have two children.
